Gen Z Yellow

Move over Millennial Pink… Gen Z Yellow is the new cool colour on the block. 2017 Was definitely the year for all things rose-tinted and sickly sweet, but 2018 has other plans!

Aptly named after Generation Z (those born in 1995 or later) this bold and bright colour burst seems like a natural progression of colour. Compared to the bubblegum girliness that has been flooding Instagram feeds for what feels like ever, yellow is a welcomed move-on, embodying optimism, energy and oomph. Just like Millennial Pink, the main influencers of this trend are the younger generation, who seem to be taking us along for the ride as they evolve & find their feet – their aesthetic mimicking their journey. Already making a name for itself since the Spring/Summer 17 runways, this calmingly cheerful colour tone is popping up everywhere, from optimistic yellow-tinted sunglass lenses to patent mini skirt colour pops, and even popular social media branding such as Snapchat.

“Millennial Pink has become a sign of its generation, a symbol of feminism & gender neutrality – but thanks to overuse it has become ubiquitous & predictable. Yellow, with its vibrant aesthetic & connotations with of-the-moment brands like Snapchat, offers fresh respite from pink fatigue.”

– WGSN

As per its predecessor, Gen Z Yellow is not one specific shade, but rather a collation of several tones of yellow, ranging from primrose and daisy to mimosa and volt yellow, feeling both modern yet nostalgic. If you’re not quite ready to throw away all your gimmicky pink accessories and décor, fear not, as Gen Z yellow works beautifully paired with Millennial Pink, or even subtly accented against neutrals adding a burst of colour to your outfit or home décor.
